New season starts …

New season kicks off on Monday

September 2025

The new starts on Monday 22nd at 7:30 with a presentation called intriguingly Murder, Mishap and Misfortune by Alan Forshaw. Alan’s presentations are always good value and show a deep knowledge of the subject and will no doubt contain some surprises.

The full programme is available and copies can be picked up in the Library (immediately to the right when you go in), the Tourist Information Centre in Fish Row or a pdf can be seen via this link.

If you want to try us out then the first visit is free and full season’s membership (14 evenings) for a mere £25.

New seasons programme

The programme for the 2025/26 season is published

August 2025

We are delighted to attach the programme for the forthcoming season starting on Monday 22 September at 7:30. You can see there is lots to interest with presentations of more familiar composers together with the less well-known. The strange but amazing music of Eric Satie has an outing and also Delius, a composer we have not featured for many years.

There are evenings on American music as well as from Iberia. Indeed, there is considerable variety in the programme. There are two members’ evenings where members bring along one or two of their favourites. The evenings are open to all we should add.

The Society is keen to explore some of the hidden corners of the repertoire, including pieces seldom heard in the concert hall.

The programmes have been printed and if you like a paper version, they will shortly (next week) be in the Library and in the Tourism Information Centre. If you want to give us a try your first visit is free.

Final meeting tonight

May 2025

The last meeting of the current season is tonight, 12 May at 7:30 as usual in the Guides Centre, St Ann Street, Salisbury. It will be on the music of Edgar Bainton and we are delighted to welcome Michael Jones to present.

We will resume our new season in the Autumn and the programme has been finalised. It will be posted here soon.

Next meeting

Next meeting and changes to the programme

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have had to make some changes to our programme involving the next three meetings.

On Monday 6th November, Peter Horwood will be presenting Off the Beaten Track in which he takes us on an informal journey along some less familiar musical byways.

On Monday 20th November, Peter again will be presenting, this time the third in his series on 20th Century Music. [This was due to be presented at the previous meeting].

Our final programme this season is slightly changed and will be Christmas Special in which members of the SRMS committee will present a range of pieces with a seasonally appropriate theme.

We look forward to seeing you at these evenings.

New season has got underway

Next meeting on 6 November 2023

The Society’s new season started in September and we have an interesting programme again this year. We have a wide ranging series of evenings including music by Puccini, Gustav Holst, the best of the 20th Century and on why so few composers managed a tenth symphony. We also have two members’ evenings and a Christmas quiz.

You can download the programme here or printed copies will be in the Library, Oxfam (upstairs) and the Tourism Information Centre next week.

The Society meets once a fortnight on a Monday evening starting at 7:30 and we aim to finish at 10 pm. It meets in the Guides’ Centre in St Ann Street although access is from the rear off Friary Lane. Parking is free and it is accessible for people with mobility difficulties.

Meeting on 17th April

Note change to programme this coming Monday

It was good to read Peter Curbishley’s report on Robin’s presentation in last week’s Salisbury Journal. 

Our next meeting will be on Monday 17th April as scheduled, but due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to change the ‘running order’ of our coming evenings. Alan Forshaw has very kindly agreed to bring forward his presentation, so our programme now is: 

On Monday 17th April,  Alan Forshaw will present “Like father like son . . .”  and describe how ‘keeping it in the family’ can work a treat.

This will be followed on Monday 22nd May when our guest presenter, Simon Coombs, will now present “Czech music from Smetana to Martinů” .

And then our final session of 2022-23 will be on Monday 5th June when Peter Horwood will present his ‘American Adventure’.

We hope you can join us for all or most of the remaining sessions for 2022-23.

New season about to start!

NOTE: please note that the first meeting does not take place tomorrow, 12th September as printed in Music in Salisbury. We had to change our programme at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. The first meeting is on 26th. We are sorry for this sudden change.

The new season gets underway soon and the programme is printed and will soon be in various locations around town. A pdf version is below. It is a varied and extremely interesting programme so we look forward to seeing you again on Monday 26th September for a presentation of music from Ukraine. We look forward to seeing you again or welcoming new members.

The new programme for 2022 – 23 is available and the print version can be found in the Library, TIC, and the Oxfam music Room. We have some outside speakers including someone from the Scriabin Society and old friends returning with new topics.

There will be a coupon in the programme entitling you to a free evening* for those who are curious about what we do. Keep an eye on this site – better still put it into your favourites – and we look forward to seeing you when we kick off again in the autumn.

Rest of the season

Cancellation

Since our last email it has become clear that we are very unlikely to be able to resume any of our sessions this season, and so we have regretfully decided to cancel the rest of this season’s sessions.
We plan to re-schedule the two sessions with a presenter (Peter Horwood and Richard Langham Smith) into the 2020-21 season.
If it happens that things ease sufficiently in the next 2 months (one can but hope) we might look at arranging a session, perhaps a special members’ evening in June to round off the season.
The committee is endeavouring to prepare the 2020-21 programma which we hope will commence as usual in September 2020.
Meanwhile, I hope we all stay healthy and safe.
